We Rock Your Trail
Tallman Mt. State Park
This weekends crew outing was to rehabilitate several sections of the New York Long Path. LDTC crew member and trail maintainer of this section is Dr. David Booth. After completing a very extensive trail evaluation he presented a plan and a method on how to accomplish the needed repairs etc. David did all the leg work necessary, contacting the park manager to get approvals and help securing the materials needed. Over a three mile section of trail (NY Long Path) there were several areas David identified in need of improvements. They were: stepping stones in a stream crossing, clearing a path through an enormous tree blocking the trail (AKA a blowdown), two new bog-bridge sections, a new trail head with new signs, replacement of deteriorated wooden steps (quick steps), a few waterbars, and if we had time, a few new stone steps. It was a beautiful weather weekend and everyday we had a great turnout of volunteers. In the end we accomplished it all and a fun doing it.
As you can tell from the pictures this project took a lot of effort all done by volunteers.
Speaking of volunteers, not everyone could make it every time we went out and that’s OK with us. Some volunteers came out out all three days, others could only make it 1 or 2. Don’t feel that you have to commit to the entire project or even a weekend, join us whenever you can, any help is greatly appreciated and being a volunteer you can come and go as you see fit.
Hopefully our new volunteers learned something about crew life and about trail building. I know everyone had a great time. We really appreciate their efforts and look forward to seeing them again.
If this looks like the kind of activity you want to be part of, contact us, we're a community of volunteers who build, protect and maintain hiking trails.
We invite you to join in. You’ll be glad you did.
