We Rock Your Trail
This was our second weekend on this project and turned out to be one of the hottest weekends in several years, breaking heat records everywhere. In spite of the heat, we had a great volunteer turnout all three days. During our morning safety meeting we discussed what to look for with heat related issues. We knew it was going to be hot, very hot with heat indices well over 100° and we wanted to remind everyone what to look out for. We got to work moving big rocks out of the way and even bigger rocks were moved into place as stepping stones. Under these extreme heat and massive rock issues we moved ahead slowly and finally started seeing some treadway. Taking longer safety breaks and stoping early, the crew was kept safe and everyone had a great time. No rain this weekend but we sure could have used some by Sunday.
This is how building a new trail begins and finally by the end of the weekend you could really see a trail or path taking shape. Not much yet, but it’s a start and you can really see our progress.
As you can tell from the pictures this project will take a lot of effort and as always, it will be done by volunteers.
Speaking of volunteers, not everyone could make it Friday, Saturday and Sunday and that’s OK with us. Some volunteers came out out every day, others came out for one or two. Don’t feel that you have to commit to the entire project or even a weekend, join us whenever you can, any help is greatly appreciated and being a volunteer you can come and go as you see fit.
This project is just starting, new volunteers will get to learn something about crew life and a lot about trail building, I know everyone will have a great time.
If this looks like the kind of activity you want to be part of, contact us, we're a community of volunteers who build, protect and maintain hiking trails.
We invite you to join in. You’ll be glad you did.
