We Rock Your Trail
Well we’re finally finished with Black Mountain. We started in June of 2018 and finished up in June of 2019. We rehabilitated about .5 mile of steep terrain (300 feet over .5 mile) by adding steps, crib walls and a lot of solid new treadway. Previously it was a dangerous steep climb to the summit but by adding 173 new steps, better and more stable treadway, it's now safer and more enjoyable to hike. We know some hikers don’t like steps but to keep this section of the Appalachian Trail open and safe, a sustainable solution was needed.
It’s been a challenging project and mother nature really sent us a lot of rain, but we worked through it and completed our project on Saturday June 22, 2019.
Yes all accomplished by Volunteers.
On Sunday the 23rd., where the A.T. crosses an old woods road, the NY Parks department showed up with an ATV and transported our heavy tools (about 2200 lb.) down about 1 mile to the parking lot. It took two trips to transport everything. Thank You Thank You Thank You Micky and associates.
Another crew outing weekend comes to an end. We are done on Black Mountain and we are eagerly looking forward to our next project.
Nice work everyone. I am very proud of what we accomplished.
Thank you all.
The Appalachian Trail is always changing and evolving. All along the A.T., work crews, like LDTC constantly relocate and rehabilitate portions of the trail to protect nature and to enhance the Appalachian Trail hiking experience.
All of our projects take a lot of effort and as always, all done by volunteers. Our experience crew and crew leaders are eager to teach volunteers of all abilities the skills needed to build hiking trails.
Speaking of volunteers, not everyone can make it everyday and that’s OK with us. Some volunteers come out everyday while others can only make it to 1 or 2. Don’t feel that you have to commit to an entire project or even a weekend, any help is appreciated and being a volunteer you can come and go as you see fit.
We're a community of volunteers who build, protect and maintain hiking trails. We invite you to join us. It’s Fun. You’ll be glad you did.
