We Rock Your Trail
At the Fingerboard shelter on the Appalachian Trail in Harriman State Park, there has been an increase of bear activity, LDTC was tasked to install a bear cable. A bear cable is a place where a hiker can secure their food stuffs overnight and NOT in the shelter or their tent. A steel cable is stretched bewteen two trees with 12 hooks seperated by sections of gaden hose. There are inverted cones at each end to deter small animals like mice, chipmunks and squirrels from reaching the hooks. A hikers food bag can be lifted up to a hook using the supplied pole. While we were there a bear was caught in the trap. The bear had a tooth pulled, blood drawn, ear tagged and sent on its way using loud noises and rubber pellets. Hopefully the bear will learn that looking for food at the shelter is too much trouble and will find food in the forest and not return to the shelter.
